Cingal Injections
The combined effects of lubrication and anti-inflammatory properties are essential for effectively managing osteoarthritis knee pain.
Over time, changes in synovial fluid and the breakdown of joint structures can lead to the development of osteoarthritis-related knee discomfort.
Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring component of the knee joint’s synovial fluid, plays a key role in this process. Viscosupplementation involves injecting hyaluronic acid into the joint to lubricate the cartilage, much like oil lubricates an engine. This method offers long-lasting relief with a gradual onset, focusing on sustained pain reduction.
Cortisone, with its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, is used to reduce swelling within the joint, providing rapid short-term pain relief.
What is Cingal®?
Cingal® is a combination injection of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Corticosteroid for the management of Osteoarthritis of the knee joint. Hyaluronic Acid Injections (HA Injections) that contain Sodium Hyaluronate which is a viscosupplement and Corticosteriod is an anti-inflammatory medication. However, due to the HA component of the Cingal injections being the major component they have been approved as a medical device so does not require a prescription and has been deemed safe and effective for its intended use within knee joints in the UK.
Are there any risks or side effects?
In Cingal® clinical studies, a low number of patients experience minor side effects. However, with any injections there are low level risks of having an allergic reaction, infections, injection site pain, bruising and bleeding, redness, rash or swelling of the joint.
